US imposes sanctions on family members connected to Maduro government

(MENAFN) The United States on Friday imposed new sanctions on seven individuals connected by family ties to figures associated with what it described as the “illegitimate and corrupt” government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to an official announcement.

The measures target relatives of Carlos Erik Malpica Flores, identified as a nephew of Maduro, as well as family members of Ramon Carretero Napolitano, a Panamanian businessman previously sanctioned by Washington for allegedly enabling “deceptive actions or corruption involving the Venezuelan state.” Those affected include Maduro’s sister-in-law, additional relatives of Malpica Flores, and two close family members of Carretero, as stated in the announcement.

Commenting on the decision, a US official said, “Maduro and his cronies have devastated Venezuela’s economy and continue to threaten our region’s stability.”

The move comes as tensions between Washington and Caracas continue to rise. In recent days, US President Donald Trump announced a “total and complete blockade” of sanctioned oil tankers traveling to or from Venezuela.

Relations deteriorated further on Dec. 10, when US forces seized a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela’s coastline, an action that authorities in Caracas condemned as “international piracy.”

US officials say the expanding measures are intended to combat corruption and disrupt drug trafficking networks. Venezuelan authorities, however, accuse Washington of using anti-narcotics operations as a justification to undermine Maduro’s rule and seek control over the country’s oil wealth, according to reports.
