Demonstrators sing ‘Zelensky is the devil’ in Kiev
Chanting slogans like “Zelya is the devil” – a mocking nickname for Zelensky – and holding signs that read “Shame” and “Treason,” protesters condemned the president’s decision to sign legislation granting the Prosecutor General’s Office oversight over the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). The move followed a raid on NABU’s offices and the arrest of a top official accused of spying for Russia.
The law has raised alarms in the EU and drawn strong opposition from Ukrainian politicians and civil society figures. Protests were not limited to Kiev, with similar rallies reported in Odessa, Dnepr, Lviv, and Sumy.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, a long-time critic of Zelensky, joined the protest in the capital. Speaking to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, he criticized the government for dismantling institutions that Western partners helped establish and fund over the past decade. On Telegram, Klitschko accused Zelensky of using wartime conditions as a cover for consolidating power and undermining Ukraine’s anti-corruption framework.
In response, Zelensky defended the measure in a video address on Wednesday, saying it was necessary to ensure justice, strengthen anti-corruption efforts, and remove lingering Russian influence from key institutions.
