Zelensky claims Ukraine presented Russia timeframe for discussions
This year, the two sides have met twice in Istanbul, with Umerov heading the Ukrainian delegation. Their latest meeting in June included exchanging draft peace proposals and agreeing to further prisoner swaps. Moscow has expressed willingness to continue talks since then.
Zelensky emphasized on Saturday evening that negotiations need to accelerate and that all efforts should focus on achieving a ceasefire.
Last month, during the Istanbul talks, Russia proposed a conditional ceasefire, contingent on Ukraine taking concrete steps such as halting Western military aid deliveries—an offer Kiev rejected. President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of using ceasefire talks to regroup and rearm, while Moscow insists it will not accept NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, even as peacekeepers.
Zelensky reiterated his willingness for a personal meeting with Putin to secure a lasting peace. However, Moscow views Zelensky as illegitimate since his presidential term ended last year. Although Putin expressed openness to a meeting, he questioned Zelensky’s authority to sign binding agreements.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed Zelensky’s push for one-on-one talks is aimed at preserving his legitimacy and countering Western efforts to remove him from power.
