Cambodia Shuts Two More Border Crossings with Thailand
(MENAFN) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on Sunday that two additional border checkpoints with Thailand have been fully closed amid the escalating border dispute between the neighboring ASEAN countries.
Hun Manet revealed that late Saturday, the Thai military informed the governor of Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province about its unilateral decision to shut the Choub Korki border crossing starting Sunday.
"I agreed with the governor's response that we will also close that border checkpoint permanently," the Cambodian leader stated on his official social media channels.
He further instructed the governor to notify the Thai authorities that Cambodia would also close the Choam checkpoint alongside Choub Korki from that day forward.
The prime minister criticized the Thai army’s unilateral border closures, which have been ongoing since June 7, emphasizing the lack of consideration for the adverse impact on citizens from both countries.
"It has never been Cambodia's intention to cause difficulty for people in our both countries who need to use border checkpoints. Yet, if the Thai army continues to use this method to put pressure on Cambodia, Cambodia can answer accordingly at any time," Hun Manet asserted.
Meanwhile, the Thai military has declared the closure of the Chong Sai Taku trade point in Buriram province as of Saturday.
In an official statement on Sunday, the Thai army announced the implementation of control measures for opening and closing all types of border crossings along the Thai-Cambodian border to address security concerns.
Thai media outlets reported on Sunday that the Thai military is preparing to shut two additional crossings in response to Cambodia’s decision to close two border points.
Adding to the rising tensions, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a public warning advising Thai citizens against non-essential travel to Cambodia amid the ongoing dispute.
The ministry urged Thai nationals currently in Cambodia to exercise heightened caution, avoid protest gatherings and risky areas, and stay updated through official channels.
This border standoff follows a violent encounter on May 28, when troops from both nations exchanged gunfire in a contested border zone, leading to the death of a Cambodian soldier.
